With January 1st just around the corner, many people are thinking about New Year’s resolutions for the coming year. There are all the standard resolutions to choose from– exercise more, eat better, save more… Well, here’s another idea—why not strive to make more natural choices in your skincare, eschew products laden with potentially harmful chemicals, and achieve beautiful skin in 2011 naturally?
Why would you want to switch to natural skincare? Well, many mainstream cosmetics and skincare products have formulations brimming with all kinds of potentially hazardous chemicals and cheap, synthetic ingredients. In fact, over 125 ingredients commonly used in skincare are actually suspected to cause cancer, 25 have been linked to birth defects, and 20 have been shown to cause adverse nervous system reactions. It may seem crazy that these poisonous ingredients can be included in the personal care products we use each and every day– soaps, lotions, shampoos, make-up– especially knowing that what you put on your skin is absorbed by your body. Well, perhaps it’s less surprising when you learn that since 1938, the personal care industry in the US has had the right to regulate itself. That means that these products can be developed and marketed without FDA government approval of ingredients—even if testing has proven that these ingredients are dangerous. What’s more, pre-market safety tests are not required in the industry and manufacturers are allowed to add almost any ingredient to a personal care product (with the exception of a very small list of banned chemicals). Scary, isn’t it?
So what kind of chemicals should you be on the lookout for in your personal care products? There are too many to list conclusively here, but a few of the worst and most common offenders include artificial fragrances, synthetic colourants, Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) and Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES), DEA, MEA, TEA, Triclosan, Propylene Glycol, Mineral Oil, and DMDM Hyantoin. Look up any one of these and you’ll see just how dangerous they can be…and then check the ingredients on your personal care products. You’ll be shocked at just how prevalent these chemicals really are. To learn more, check out this interesting link about the personal care industry: http://storyofstuff.org/cosmetics
Skincare shouldn’t be hazardous to your health…and it doesn’t have to be. In 2011, stop exposing yourself and your family to these potentially dangerous chemicals and adopt a more natural approach to personal care. 100% natural skincare products, like Mont Echo’s Bath & Body line, can be just as effective or even far more effective than their synthetic counterparts, and they contain no poisons, hazardous chemicals, and cheap synthetic ingredients. They are better for the environment, and better for you.
So this year, consider making the switch to natural skincare as part of your New Year’s resolution and start achieving beautiful skin naturally!
