Finally, it’s time to harvest tea leaves from our female Sea Buckthorn trees!
As we discussed in a previous blog posted earlier this summer, our Sea Buckthorn tea leaf harvest takes place in two installments—first, we collect leaves from the males in early summer, then we collect leaves from the females in late summer.
A quick recap– why do we collect both male and female leaves for our tea, and at different times in the summer? Because the male and female leaves have different nutritional profiles and different tastes—due to the different jobs of the male and female plants. The male plants produce pollen in early spring to fertilize the females, which then spend the summer creating fruit. Because the male plants finish their job in early spring, we can then collect their leaves for our tea in June without disrupting the already-completed fertilization process. Female leaves can only be collected in late summer after their fruit has reached maturity to ensure that the female leaf collection does not affect the fruiting process.
So it’s now harvest time for our fruit, which means it’s also harvest time for our female tea leaves! We hand-pick our leaves from our female trees at the same time as we collect their fruit. The process is time-consuming, but worth the effort.
Once we’ve harvested the female leaves, we’ll bring them to our custom drying room at our onsite processing facility, where they will replace the male leaves we already air-dried on racks earlier this summer. The male leaves have since been bagged to await their female counterparts. Once both male and female leaves are dried, we’ll mix them together in a certain ratio to create our tea. It’s this ratio of our organic male and female tea leaves that gives our tea its unique flavour and impressive nutritional profile.
So why drink our Mont Echo Sea Buckthorn tea? Well, not only is it delicious, with a mild, earthy flavour, but it’s also great for your health. Sea Buckthorn leaves are full of nutrients, including flavonoids, anti-oxidants, protein, vitamins, minerals, beta-carotene, and even trace omega fatty acids, and our tea is naturally caffeine-free. The benefits of Sea Buckthorn tea are numerous—it has anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant properties, can help aid in digestion, promotes good cardiovascular health, and may even help provide liver protection. So sit back, relax, and enjoy a cup!
