Mont Echo is committed to Eco-Sustainability.

What is Eco-Sustainability? Well, simply put, it’s about caring for our environment and about giving more than you’re taking – or at least not taking more than you give. And how is Mont Echo committed to Eco-sustainability?

Our commitment is evident in every aspect of our business— from our decision to focus on Canadian-grown Sea Buckthorn to our onsite processing protocols to our organic ingredients to our eco-friendly packaging!

When we started out, we knew that focusing solely on Canadian-grown Sea Buckthorn and processing our own ingredients were going to be the cornerstones of our business. But when we told others in the industry, they said it couldn’t be done. They claimed that we would have to rely on sources in Asia or India because the cost of growing, harvesting and processing our own Sea Buckthorn ingredients would be too high to sustain a business. Undeterred, we continued on our chosen path and have proven that with the right team, the right growers and the right knowledge, it can be done.

So why was it so important to us to focus on Canadian-grown Sea Buckthorn?

First of all, it supports local agriculture and small farms—which is always a good thing! Beyond the impact we have on our environment, we feel that it is important to keep agriculture economically sustainable in Quebec and our surrounding provinces.  Therefore, it is our goal to maintain mutually beneficial relationships with neighboring farmers, who have as much pride as we do in providing the best that Sea Buckthorn has to offer.

Secondly, it allows us to oversee and directly influence the methods by which our raw materials are grown (without herbicides, pesticides or fungicides) and harvested. Studies indicate that poor air and soil quality in other parts of the world are affecting the crops grown there, and it is important to us to ensure that our Sea Buckthorn is as pure as possible and grown in accordance with organic standards. Nowhere is this more evident than on our own family farms, where we planted our first trees back in 2003.  Our farms are, in fact, pre-certified for EcoCert and NOP Organic Certification in 2010. EcoCert is an organic certification organization, founded in France in 1991. It is based in Europe but conducts inspections in over 80 countries, making it one of the largest organic certification organizations in the world.

And finally, sourcing Sea Buckthorn from Canada lowers our carbon footprint by keeping our supply and farmer relationships as close to home as possible and minimizing the need to ship raw materials.

But utilizing only Canadian-grown Sea Buckthorn is only the first part of our mission. The second, equally important part involves processing our Sea Buckthorn ingredients ourselves, onsite, with respect for the pristine rural environment in which we live. We’ve accomplished this goal too. We do all processing, including juicing, drying, supercritical seed and fruit oil extraction and gentle steam extraction ourselves onsite, using some of the most advanced and environmentally-friendly processes and equipment available. In fact, we’re the first company in North America to do so.

And our commitment to Eco-sustainability doesn’t stop there. Our Mont Echo skincare products are packaged in glass, which is 100% recyclable, and our tea boxes and gift bags are made of recycled papers. All of our product ingredients are certified organic, biodynamically grown and / or wildcrafted, and never bleached or processed.

This week, Mont Echo was invited to attend the Green Living Show in Toronto, Canada— Toronto’s largest green consumer show. We were excited to be a part of this event and inspired by the people we met and the things we saw there.  The experience cemented and affirmed our commitment to Eco-sustainability. In the future, Mont Echo will continue to implement green and sustainable initiatives to ensure that our company and our products are good for you and good for the environment.
