Though over the past few years the world has become totally hyped on Superfruits, such as Acai, Goji, and Mangosteen, none of these quite compares to Sea Buckthorn. Sea Buckthorn has been around for centuries but is only now starting to gain recognition in North America for its powerful nutritional and medicinal benefits. So, what exactly is Sea Buckthorn and what’s so special about it?
Sea Buckthorn has been known and used for centuries throughout various parts of the world including Asia, Finland, Russia and other areas of Europe. The plant’s impressive nutritional and medicinal benefits have been celebrated since antiquity and have been documented in numerous historical records including Ancient Greek writings and the Tibetan medical classic rGyud Bzi during the 8th Century, and there are many references describing its use by Genghis Khan to protect and nourish his army.
Though relatively new to North America, Sea Buckthorn is a hardy, deciduous plant that thrives in our extreme climate and frigid temperatures of Quebec. It grows up to several meters in height, and has silvery-green leaves, massive thorns along the branches, and abundant berry-like fruit. The scent of the fruit is floral and beautiful, but quite subtle and hard to describe in words. The taste of the fruit, on the other hand, is anything but subtle! Tasters describe the fruit as extremely tart, like a very sharp orange. The unique, strong flavour pairs beautifully with chocolate and lends itself to complex recipes for luxury foods such as sorbets, desserts, juices, sauces, and jams. The most memorable thing about Sea Buckthorn, however, is probably the vivid orange colour of the fruit—a colour that assures your senses of its bioavailability.
Though the plant is best known for its vibrant orange berry, Sea Buckthorn’s therapeutic properties reach far beyond the fruit. In fact, each component of the plant, including its leaves, stems, bark, fruit, and seeds, offers its own therapeutic benefit. Each component is powerful on its own; however, a powerful synergistic effect takes place when the components are combined. This synergy promotes a ‘beauty from the inside out’ effect on the body. The fruit and seeds contain rare and abundant nutritive profiles, including extremely high levels of vitamin C, carotenoids, tocopherols, and flavonoids. They also contain vitamins E, B1, B2, K and P, amino acids, dietary minerals, and polyphenolic acids, and the fruit is an unsurpassed natural source of vitamin A. However, perhaps most notable are the ideal levels and ratios of Omega fatty acids 3, 6, 7 and 9 found in the fruit and seeds!
Oils extracted from Sea Buckthorn fruit and seeds are very valuable and must be carefully extracted in order to avoid losing or damaging the nutritional components. Used for both topical and ingestible applications, these luxurious oils build the foundation for a youthful and radiant appearance.
